hard drives fail all around me

Wow. In about a week’s time, I had the hard drive crash on my laptop. Then, the hard drive our web sites are on with our host crashed not once, but twice, within a few days time. What are the chances of that happening? Well, whatever the chances are, it certainly happened and I hope to god it doesn’t happen again (ever).

Luckily we didn’t have any posts lined up for the site last week but my “news” notice is gone now. I’ll have to put it up again soon. I’m dead tired from Comic-Con and I’ve got a few ideas for articles running in my head but for now, I must sleep and face another full work week. Ugh.

I’m so glad I got the three year service plan when I bought my laptop, because that damn thing is in the shop again for repairs. The guy told me it could take up to two weeks. Oh well, at least I had everything but my email backed up. I’m starting to think I should just check all my email on the web. I’ve gotten my money’s worth out of that service plan, and to think, I thought it was expensive! My laptop has already been in for repairs to get a new hard drive and they put the bill amount on your receipt even if you don’t have to pay and those repairs alone would have cost me $700+. Oy.

I got a subscription for “Golf Digest” in the mail today. What the fuck? I thought I was supposed to get like, “Cooking Light” and “Martha Stewart” for a free trial and instead I get Golf fucking Digest. Golf sucks. Though I suppose nothing will ever top when Brandon started to get a subscription to Sister 2 Sister. That was hilarious.

I also got “Marie Claire”, but that’s not as amusing as Golf Digest. Though, it says stuff like “The Erotic New Trend” and “Perfect Jeans – They’ll Make Your Ass Look Awesome” on the cover. Golf Digest smells like cologne. And apparently I can learn how Phil nails his tee shots. Wonderful.

PS – “The Erotic New Trend” – girl on girl action. Is that really a “trend”?

I haven’t written lately. I’ve been doing things but just haven’t written about it. Nothing crafty. Oh, wait, I did make a card but I forgot to photo it. I’m terrible. I’ll be making another one though so maybe then I will remember to photograph it. It was a beachy-summer card. Simple, but cute I thought.

Oy, a full work week. How sad. I was enjoying all this time off, though, I had to work for part of it anyway. All this working. Pish posh. Saturday was Heather’s last minute housewarming party which was pretty nice. I tried to be more sociable than I usually am. I think it worked.

I got some new shoes today. I saw them in the Sunday ads and I thought, “Oh, those are for me”. And they were on sale, score. I totally bought them. I also got some Kitchen Aid baking mats since they were 50% off. I am sure I will use them soon, but right now I want to make some apple stuff since our tree is overflowing and the fruit keeps falling off. I think I’ll make some apple crisp. Does anyone want some? I’ll totally make extra if someone will take it home with them and eat it. There’s some baking in my future.

Next week Brandon is coming for a visit! And we’ll be heading to Comic Con again this year, though I have to work part of it. Maybe I won’t be so ass tired like I was last year. Last year we just got up, headed to the con, came home, ate and went to sleep. We did that for three days in a row. It was draining, but fun. July is going to be a busy month.

l&l hawaiian barbecue

June 28th, 2006 at 9:01 pm

For lunch today I decided I’d be adventurous and try something new. I went to L&L Hawaiian Barbecue in the Mira Mesa Mall. I couldn’t remember where it was exactly – the sign for it is past the mall a bit and next to some shops outside of the main mall area. Anyway, it was weird. But I found it!

I didn’t actually get any barbecue, instead I opted for the Fried Shrimp mini plate which gets you 4 huge shrimp, a scoop of rice and a scoop of macaroni salad. On the menu it says a “regular” plate will get you 2 scoops of rice, but I hope for the extra $2-$3 dollars you also get more of the main entree, otherwise that’s some pricey rice. At this location they also offered beef lumpia (4 for $1) which I could not pass up. I love lumpia and hardly ever get to eat it. I’ve tried to make the frozen ones they have at the asian market but they put weird sauce in it. This lumpia was tasty, not as good as my mom’s of course, but good nonetheless. Next time I would just opt for a mini plate since I was quite full after my meal. The shrimp was perfect and the macaroni salad was really tasty. Not bad for $4.95!

I did have a picture of my mini plate, but I ran out of gallery room on my phone and didn’t realize it! Doh. Instead, here’s a picture of my lumpia and my drink.

They offer all types of main entrees – from beef, chicken, pork and seafood to burgers and noodles (there was also something with spam, but I forget what exactly – I think spam and noodles?). Next time I think I’ll try some barbecue!

carrot cake cookies

June 20th, 2006 at 8:45 pm

by mary

Oh yes. I saw these cookies made on Everyday Food on PBS. They were really easy to make (well.. despite the fiasco my dad and I created in the kitchen trying to shred the carrots just right and going through about three appliances – Kitchen Aid mixer attachment wins the day) and they went pretty fast. I actually kept these cookies in the fridge because of the cream cheese frosting. Mmm. You’re supposed to smoosh them together but I preferred to just lay some icing on top of one cookie instead of making a sandwich. That seemed more in line with the cake part, plus, you get more icing for the cookie. Here’s the recipe if you’re so inclined to try and make them yourself. I left the currants out of my cookies. Oh and on the web site they have “1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted” listed under the frosting part and cookie part – it’s just for the cookies. You don’t need that much for the frosting, just the 2 ounces of butter for the frosting.

On Friday we’re having a potluck at work. I elected to bring lemon bars. I think they will be tasty.

At work I also noticed a few things: there’s a coat rack near the women’s bathroom that currently is holding one shoe on it. And today when I walked by the men’s bathroom, I noticed a mug full of liquid sitting on the floor next to a pole. My thought is that maybe a guy put his drink down outside the bathroom, when to the bathroom, and then forgot about his drink. I don’t really know the story, but I found it curious.
