My Dog Loves Everyone

My dog loves everyone. He loves having people come over and into the backyard because he believes that they're there just to see him. It's kind of silly really, who goes to someone's house just to see his or her dog?

Enter, scene one: the phone rings.

"Hey, John! How are you?"

"I'm good, how are you doing?"

"Oh, I'm swell. Say, is your dog free tonight? I was wondering if I could come visit him."

"Let me check his calendar... hmm... no, looks like Peter is coming to visit him today."

"Oh damn! Well, can you put me down for tomorrow?"

"Oh, sure." Scribble, scribble.

Well, I suppose if it makes my dog happy to think that guests are there to see him, that's fine with me. He is rather personable anyway. More than I am at times. I should take notes from my dog: Be cute and consistent. Rub noses and paws with others. Even if they ignore you for a bit, they will eventually throw some attention your way, and you might even get some table scraps. Never give up! Feign limping if you have to.

My dog likes to fake limp from time to time. All of sudden for no apparent reason he starts to limp and hop around on his other three legs. Concerned, I try to inspect him and see if I can figure out where it's hurting him. I lie him down and feel up his "broken" leg and he doesn't respond at all. He just looks at me sadly while occasionally thumping his tail against the floor. I shrug my shoulders at him and he reluctantly gets up and hops back outside. In about twenty minutes he stops limping and runs around the backyard again like a little puppy. What was that all about? I go outside again and he sits on his rump and wags his tail at me acting like nothing happening. He's a sneaky little thing.

One time, my two friends broke into my house and my dog greeted them with a wagging tail. Of course, one could argue that he knew my friends and were therefore excited to see them or anyone for that matter. And my friends weren't there to steal anything, so maybe my dog just knew that and let it slide. Yes, that's it. He knew my friends were only there to drop off some food from Subway for me and to go up into my room and flip over my furniture and leave notes all over my bathroom and bedroom for me to find later. Well maybe not. He's not really much of a guard dog. He'd rather sleep or chase lizards.

While my dog does love my friends and guests of any kind, I only distinctly remember one person he does not love. In high school I had a male friend over and we were in my garage talking. My dog came into the garage, stood protectively in front of me and barked at my friend whenever he spoke. I was really surprised since my dog had never done that before and I suggested we go back inside. I think my friend's high-pitched voice was annoying to my poor dog's ears.

When I come home in the afternoons my dog senses me before I even walk through the door. He's always excited to see me and he's always in a good, playful mood. He knows when to kick back and relax with me and loves me unconditionally. It's pretty neat.

I wish more people were like dogs sometimes.
