I wanted to see this movie as soon as I saw an ad for it. It looked amusing and I highly enjoy being amused. Luckily, this movie did not disappoint.
The basic plot of the movie is about a guy named Nick Naylor who’s the chief spokesman for the tobacco companies. He basically hated by all kinds of groups and people, ranging from the Cancer Society to government officials (William H Macy is brilliant in this movie as the senator from Vermont who in the movie spits out, “The great State of Vermont will not apologize for its cheese!” after Nick states suggests that Vermont cheese may be responsible for causing so much high cholesterol in a retort to the Senator). He spins the truth like no other, talking his way out of sticky situations and turning them around and charming the pants off of just about everyone he meets. He takes tough situations and makes gains from them, making the tobacco companies look like they’re just another corporation trying to make ends meet. Along for most of the ride is his 12 year old, who looks up to him as a role model and who he tries to make proud and give lessons to throughout the film.
One of my favorite parts of the movie is his weekly lunch meetings with the self named “Merchants of Death”, aka the spokespeople for the Alcohol and Firearms industries. They meet and discuss their own strategies for their industries, being that they work for the top three vices that the American people love to hate. The name alone makes me chuckle.
Another great part is when Nick is sent to Los Angeles to see a movie guy, Jeff, (Rob Lowe) about how to get cigarettes back into movies to make cigarettes “cool” again. Jeff’s assistant amused me greatly as he’s showing Nick and his son into the building. He sees a fellow co-worker and says to him, “I'm going to impale your mom on a spike and feed her dead body to my dog with syphilis!” and his co-worker laughs and says, “Ha, you got me!” Ahh, inside jokes.
Since I don’t feel like telling you much more, I’ll just sum it up: if you’re easily amused like me and enjoy satires, you’ll like this movie. If you’re not so easily amused… well, you might still like it, give it a shot. If you take things to seriously and are easily offended, stay home and don’t go outside and learn to lighten up a bit, god dammit. |
