stacey's youthful crushesit occurred to me fairly recently, upon thanking ron for surprising me with a movie called “dead men walk”, that i may have had some somewhat unusual crushes in my youth. we all had crushes, and many of them are easy to guess based on a persons’ generation. my generation, for instance, tended to like people like michael j fox (yes, i did), one of the “coreys” (feldmen, for me), and a member of “the new kids on the block” (stayed away from that one, i’m proud to say). but then there were the ones that do not fit into the cookie cutter world that we are forced to live in. those are the men this is about. now, there are multiple reasons a man could fall on this list. in some cases, they are men who are, and least to my knowledge, not generally thought of as heart-throbs. others were big names in their day, it just happens that their day was well before my birth. if any of these are actually quite typical of a 80’s to early 90’s grade schooler - tween, please feel free to inform me so that i may remove them. and now, without further adieu, a portion of odd crushes from stacey’s youth, listed alphabetically:

bing crosby – the road movies. i love the road movies, and have for...hrm...at least 15 years, maybe more. from what i hear, crosby could be a bit of a bastard in real life. what the hell did i care? his eyes were such bright, crystal blue that you could tell even in black and white film, he was funny, and he had a hell of a voice. that was plenty.

tim curry – that is one sweet transvestite. ok, let’s pretend that i didn’t just type that. i believe i originally encountered mr. curry when watching “clue” as a child. i also believe i watched “clue” about three times a week. kids. when slightly older, i saw him play mick jagger in an old snl episode (you know, back when it was funny). he did a great job. tim is just basically adorable. he is also proof that talent is sexy. now, everyone, “they’re knights of the round table, they dance when e’er they’re able...”

dwight frye – i was very young when i saw “dracula”. i don’t remember how young, but young. i find this crush unusual not because of the fellows’ looks, as he was fairly cute in “dracula” (in a boyish way), but because i was a little girl with a crush on the bug eater from a black and white horror movie made 47 years before i was born. he’s still a cute little asylum dweller...in a dead sort of way.

lance henriksen – most girls in my age range saw the movie “aliens” and immediately loved cpl. hicks, played by the sexy “terminator” star michael biehn. i was no exception. however, i’m guessing i was one of the few who also found themselves attracted (whatever attraction is at that age) to the knife-playing, pipe-crawling android, bishop. this was most certainly not a crush that i looked upon later in life thinking “why?” in fact, seeing more of his movies, and the short lived late ‘90’s show “millennium”, has only caused me to like him more. not only do i think his unusual looks make him oddly handsome, but he is also talented, for some reason seems like he would be an amusing fellow, and has some of the kindest eyes i have ever seen....when not playing a psychopath. i hope that, should this somehow get out to the world, and should his agent come across it while checking up on the reputation of the people he represents and pass it on, it results in an ego boost, not a restraining order.

ernie hudson – is there anyone who doesn’t adore “ghostbusters”? if there is, they should be shot. anyway, i did have a thing for egon (a crush shared with and chronicled by alyssa in theplainjane.com article “i had a thing for egon”. because of this article, i will not be including egon spengler (harold ramis) or harold t. stone (harry anderson) on this list). i also had a thing for winston. he was cool, calm, collected, and smooth. i also believe that there is a short-lived pattern of attraction that ernie hudson fits into (see charles robinson). though over the years the “thing” has subsided, i still think ernie hudson rocks. he’s talented, has a nice smile, and plays both the sweetheart retarded guy (“the hand that rocks the cradle”), and the cynical but kind tough guy (“the crow”) with dignity, humanity, and as much realism as you can expect in those films.

peter lorre – it’s probably fairly obvious that it is not peter lorre’s physical attributes that make him attractive. he’s short, bug-eyed, and just generally lacks an adonis – like appearance. however, there is something very cute about his meekness in films such as “casablanca”. he’s a classic little boy lost. he had a cute little smile too, as evident in “a comedy of terrors”

vincent price – i think everyone loves vincent price. well, not everyone, but anyone i will ever care about. he’s too cool not to love. i saw many of his movies as a kid and, when not trying to scary the bejesus out of you, he seems a sweet-tempered man with an adorable sense of humor. he also had two great smiles, one joyful and full of love, and the other devilish and sly. for a pretty good idea of what i saw behind the killing and spell casting, see “edward scissorhands”. i’m actually proud that i had this crush. in recent years i heard and interview with johnny depp about hanging out with vincent price in his trailer over a newly acquired complete works of edgar allen poe. vincent apparently closed the book and perfectly quoted a huge chunk on the raven. who wouldn’t want a guy who could do that?

tim reid – aka venus flytrap, dj on station wkrp located in cincinnati. he was cool!?! then again, those shorts...ok, i have no excuse.

charles robinson – i was a big “night court” fan. there used to be two episodes a night (at 7 and 7:30, i believe). there was, of course, harry but there was also mac, the court clerk. mac was the strong (and by strong i mean both emotionally and in a more muscular sense) one who kept order in the chaos. he was also part two of a pattern. it would appear that in absurd comedies i like the kind of geeky/nerdy guy, and the black straight man (see ernie hudson). “straight man” isn’t really the right phrase, more the black man with a comparative sense of realism...but that sounds less catchy.

rod taylor – lots of women wanted him, i just was born quite a bit after most of them, . i watched “the time machine” a lot as a kid. then came the birds. rugged but with a boyish charm, i suppose (some would dispute the rugged, but i base this on his characters actions). eyes didn’t hurt any either. of course, i never liked him enough to want to be weena. the eloi were such pussies.
