A blast from the past article that still applies: sometimes you can be too excited about the upcoming holiday.
the christmas season seems to start earlier every year. retailers start stocking christmas stuff in october. there's nothing more disturbing than looking for halloween costumes than to have christmas cards and ornaments right next to your witch's hats and odd clown make-up. i'd sad to say that i actually did consider buying christmas cards in october when i was browsing through the papyrus store. they had like some special where if you bought christmas cards in october you got some free monogram printing on the cards. it seemed like a good deal, but it also seemed so wrong. so while i did consider it, in the end i did not bend to the retailer's wishes and refused to partake in shopping for christmas so early.
my neighbors though don't really seem to have this conception that christmas can come to early. this year a few of my neighbors actually had their christmas lights up and turned on on THANKSGIVING. does anyone else see how wrong this is? not only that, but one of the house is pretty ugly. the "peace on earth" sign made out of wood and strung together with christmas lights is kind of cool, but they did go just a *wee bit* overboard. i think when you've succumbed to buying a string of plastic santa heads that you've just gone too far. santa's head should not be smiling at me. nor should *many* santa heads be lit up and smiling at me. it's just creepy somehow. here's some more photos for you to ponder. i'm sorry some of them are so dark. i suck at photography:
i don't think santa wanted to be depicted like this. check out those flower-y pionsetta things in the back there. they're like totally draped over the entrance to the house.
these are lighted reindeer. i think. that one on the right kind of looks like an antelope to me and antelope's don't really say "christmas" to me. i guess i'm old fashioned. you can sort of see the ugly white tree off to the left there, and again, the string of santa heads.
crazy christmas house in the daytime. it doesn't look like it could be so bad.
* So far for Christmas 2005, they have not done any lights. when this article was originally posted, they had that "PEACE ON EARTH" sign up for at least 4 months after Christmas (could have been more, I don't remember). So far this year they just have icicle lights up, but I think those are from last year. |
