i
knew absolutely nothing about this movie before going to see it. the impetus
behind my interest was johnny depp; rarely does he do a movie i don't
like.
essentially, depp plays an opium
addicted investigator in london. he's put on the jack the ripper case
because he has psychic episodes that give him useful clues and insight
to the murders. jack the ripper goes out and kills a bunch of hookers,
partly to cover up a monarchy secret, and partly for the love of blood
and evil.
i was uncertain at times whether
this was a movie about jack the ripper, or a case history of drug usage
in late 19th century london. either way, heather graham should not act.
they tried to give her a few lines that seemed to make some kind of meaningful
social commentary for the time, but nothing she can say dispels that blank
look behind the eyes. i always like to look at johnny depp, but this is
not my favorite of his roles either. one of my favorite part of the whole
movie is when jack the ripper gives his confession to depp's character,
and this nutty old british guy gives his speech about the masons with
dark contacts in his eyes and a raging fire in the fireplace, and all
you can think is "damn, he's pretty spooky." the psychic sequences were
neat too.
the best part of all is that
all of the hookers would have survived the movie if they didn't like grapes.
if
you want to be scared, don't go see this. it's got some neat looking cinematography
and a hot guy in it, but that's the extent of its social redeeming value.
it's worth the $6.50 for the student or senior ticket, but if i had to
pay full price i'd sit this one out. |
