So,
I just ordered the new Jude album, King of Yesterday, a little behind
schedule, and decided to listen to the whole thing on the
site to tide me over in the meantime. And Holy Jesus Christ.
"On my last record, I was holding
onto my art more tightly, I was more precious, and, you know, I lived
in a van. This time I decided to kiss the machine a little." And how was
it? "It likes to be kissed."
No it doesn't!@#! Taking really
dramatic songs like "I Will Not Die," speeding them up, and putting them
to machine-generated drums is like taking a really good book, wrapping
it in tin foil, and nailing it to the wall. Setting aside the fact that
in many instances I prefer an acoustic sound, I really like Jude's stuff
better that way because it sounds more like being sung to instead of being
sung for. If that makes any sense to anyone but me. I'm
sure I'll still listen to this album quite a bit because he has a great
voice in any case, but I'm pretty disappointed.
