I'm not really into comic books. I've read a couple in my life, mostly just looked at the pictures and skimmed over the titles and then would go look at the toys or other neat things in the comic book shop. But then these Serenity comic books came out...
Being a huge Firefly fan, I couldn't pass up grabbing up the second comic book series from Joss Whedon and company, "Better Days". I got the first incarnation at Comic-Con a few years ago. I spotted a trade paperback with "Serenity" written across it and Mal standing gloriously on the front cover and immediately had to buy it, no matter what. My boyfriend got the first comic book in the current series last month and I was so excited I bounced up and down happily in my seat at L&L Barbecue and swooned over the cover.
Like I said, I've never really been into comic books, it was never my thing. But I couldn't pass up more stories from one of my favorites universes, no matter the medium. I still have a little trouble getting into them. I sit and re-read everything a few times, trying to get the characters voices just right in my head to keep on reading the stories. It's also weird for me because you see some snatches of scenes that they're secretly thinking about - like Kaylee daydreaming about being with Simon - when it's only ever been hinted at in the series (or, comes to fruition at the end of Serenity in this case).
Aside from it being all weird for me to read comic books, I must say the new series is quite good. There's three in total, the last one coming out next month in early May. This particular series deals with the aftermath of the crew's first successful job.
I pretty much read through it the first day I got the second issue this past weekend and am already longing for the next one to come out. Is this how it always is for you comic book people? Being left hanging for another month until the next comic comes out? I don't know how to deal with this. I didn't get on the Firefly bandwagon until well after the series was over, and when I rented it on Netflix I only had one disc out at a time and gave up on waiting for the next disc and instead went out and bought the whole series on DVD. I will say though that Firefly/Serenity in comic book form is better than no Firefly at all. I've read the next series is to deal with Shepard Book's past, one that I know they were really setting up for in the series and we never got to see more. A girl can still dream about a Serenity 2 can't she? |
