I love the undead, yeah I said it, and I love the undead. Not in the "Hey, I know you're a rotting living corpse, but I just wanna snuggle up with you." kind of love. But if I had to be turned into some kind of monster I think I'd prefer a zombie over anything else. Sure the dead aren't as resilient as other monsters, they don't have much of an agenda (eat brains), but when faced with a horde of rotting undead I think just about anyone or anything is screwed. They never tire; they can't drown, and are almost invincible to most normal methods of injury.
Of course every monster has its weakness and zombies are no different. Without their brains, they are just smelly rotting corpses. They tend to be slow and not very intelligent, making them an easy target. But what we know about zombies and their ilk has started to change; a new strain has begun to show, making these walking nightmares even more terrifying than before.
I recently started reading the “Marvel Zombie Series” and I've got to tell you, super powered zombies are even scarier than regular zombies. Imagine facing a zombie with the power and presence of mind to tear you in half. In the storyline, a zombified sentry is sent into the middle of a crowded city and begins to devour as many people as possible. After being attacked by Spiderman and a few other choice superheroes, the wounds the zombies inflict immediately turn the superheroes into flesh eating super beings. The trick is that they still retain all the intelligence and knowledge they possessed before the infection, and they are now basically being overtaken by a hunger for human flesh with the means to hunt down their prey intelligently. The idea of our beloved super powered heroes devouring their loved ones and innocent people is amazingly appealing.
Going a little further back into the story, you find out that Mr. Fantastic loses his mind after a zombie She-Hulk breaks into the Baxter Building and kills his children. Convinced that the infection is the next step in human evolution, he willingly infects the rest of the Fantastic Four, much to their dismay.
Zombies have evolved from the old-time non-thinking eating machines of the past. The days of having mindless undead wandering the streets in hopes of catching their prey are slowly passing by and the newer intelligent terror is emerging as a more horrific and terrible monster than ever before. Imagine an unstoppable sentient killing machine, hungry for your flesh that will never tire and never stop until it's eaten you or turned you into its kin.
What will the future bring? Will the zombie be the new velociraptor?
Planning elaborate traps for unwary human prey? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure, whatever form these tireless undead eating machines take, it will be gruesome and vile. With the thought of devouring your flesh on their minds, relentless and unending they will eventually consume us all. I hope you’re hungry.
